Northstowe Education Campus is at the heart of the new Cambridgshire town of Northstowe. This project constructed Phase 2 of the scheme comprising 4 new buidlings with mixed construction methods, all designed to achieve BREEAM credits for Acoustics.

I worked alongside Kier and Frank Shaw Associates to develop BB93 compliant designs for Phase 2 of this project. All buildings were commissioned and achieved these criteria along with the associated BREEAM credits. The scheme comprised:
A Sixth Form building - Constructed of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and set across 3 floors.
An Extension to the Secondary School - Also constructed of CLT
New two-storey Primary School building - Steel Frame structure with concrete floors, metal framed internal walls.
New Nursery Building - Also Steel Frame
BREEAM Pol05 credit was targeted a sets out the requirements for plant noise levels at the nearest residences. This is relatively stringent at 5 dB below background sound level and provided a challenge on this project with significant items of plant proposed across the site. I modelled the site in CadnaA, a 3D sound propagation modelling software to predict spread of noise. from this I could adjust barriers, plant selections, attenuator selections and other variable to find a suitable solution.
Northstowe Education Campus was recently awarded 'Best Education Project' at the UK Forum East of England Property Awards' noting its low carbon approach.
